24 Our Responsibilities in the Abrahamic Covenant

The Lord made a covenant with Abraham and his posterity. As the seed of Abraham, we have a covenant responsibility to bring the blessings of the Savior’s gospel to all the families of the earth.

When Jesus visited His disciples after His resurrection, when He was ascending again to heaven, “two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven” (Acts 1:10-11)

All who have enjoyed the blessings of the covenant have the same responsibility to be missionaries to others.

Does the gospel of Jesus Christ matter to you? Why?

Do you think all people need it? Why?

When do you think the Abrahamic Covenant will be fulfilled?

1 Nephi 15:18 18 Wherefore, our father hath not spoken of our seed alone, but also of all the house of Israel, pointing to the covenant which should be fulfilled in the latter days; which covenant the Lord made to our father Abraham, saying: In thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.

President Nelson:

Ours is the responsibility to help fulfill the Abrahamic covenant. Ours is the seed foreordained and prepared to bless all people of the world. That is why priesthood duty includes missionary work. After some 4,000 years of anticipation and preparation, this is the appointed day when the gospel is to be taken to the kindreds of the earth. This is the time of the promised gathering of Israel. And we get to participate! Isn’t that exciting? (“Covenants,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2011, 88)

Anytime we do anything that helps anyone—on either side of the veil—to make and keep their covenants with God, we are helping to gather Israel.

What are some of your own defining characteristics?

“We are sons [and daughters] of God and the seed of Abraham” (Elder Bednar).

What are some of the defining characteristics of other people that you know?
Do you ever think, Oh, they wouldn’t be interested in the gospel of Jesus Christ? They don’t seem very religious.

They too are sons and daughters of God, and they too should be invited to make covenants with their Heavenly Father. This is what they chose in our premortal life.

Doctrinal Mastery:

My name is Jehovah, and I know the end from the beginning; therefore my hand shall be over thee.

And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee above measure, and make thy name great among all nations, and thou shalt be a blessing unto thy seed after thee, that in their hands they shall bear this ministry and Priesthood unto all nations;

10 And I will bless them through thy name; for as many as receive this Gospel shall be called after thy name, and shall be accounted thy seed, and shall rise up and bless thee, as their father;

11 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse them that curse thee; and in thee (that is, in thy Priesthood) and in thy seed (that is, thy Priesthood), for I give unto thee a promise that this right shall continue in thee, and in thy seed after thee (that is to say, the literal seed, or the seed of the body) shall all the families of the earth be blessed, even with the blessings of the Gospel, which are the blessings of salvation, even of life eternal.

  • How do you feel about the gospel of Jesus Christ?
  • Why do you think all people need it?
  • What experiences have you (or people you know) had gathering Israel?
