20 Noah Did … All That the Lord Commanded
20 Noah Did … All That the Lord Commanded
This lesson, before the flood, mirrors the evil in the world
today, before the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.
Why do you think that people get to the point where they
think they know better than history, or even better than God?
There is no sophistry in wickedness or in pride. Through humility
and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and keeping His commandments, we can stay
safe in a very troubled world.
Just like in Noah’s time, our loving Heavenly Father
has asked us to keep His commandments, not to limit our happiness and joy, but
to increase it.
Noah’s family was miraculously saved from the flood, because
the kept the commandments, built the ark as instructed, and trusted in the
Lord.
How can we also be saved in today’s world, while there is a flood of wickedness
going on all around us?
Have you ever received instructions from your parents that
have protected you and kept you safe?
Can you think of commandments from God that offer you both physical and
spiritual safety?
“Pretty please” story used by Jerry Lomenick.
Prayer to our Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ,
can also bring us back to safety.
- Why do
you think that God wants you, personally, to keep His commandments?
- How
willing are you to obey what God asks, even if you don’t understand the
reason for the commandment? Why?
Moses
8:17, 20, 22, 28–29 The spiritual condition of the people in Noah’s day.
Moses
7:43 After the people refused to hear Noah’s missionary message to repent
and return to God, Noah obeyed the Lord and built an ark, so that his own
family could be protected when the floods came?
What are you building so that you and your family can be
protected in today’s world?
Everything the Lord does for us is motivated by His love for
us as His children. Even the flood was an action of His love and mercy. He knew
that the people were no longer in a state to repent and progress and that the
children being born needed a better chance. Through the atonement of Jesus
Christ these people would still be given a chance to follow Jesus in the Spirit
World.
2 Nephi
26:24 He doeth not anything save it be for the benefit of the
world; for he loveth the world, even that he layeth down his own life
that he may draw all men unto him. Wherefore, he commandeth none that
they shall not partake of his salvation.
“Jesus Christ suffered for the sins of the people who died
in the Flood so that they could learn and repent in the spirit world” (see Moses
7:38–40; 1 Peter
3:18–20). Also, God’s choice to send the Flood protected His other spirit
children from being born into such dangerous and wicked circumstances
Can you imagine the people mocking Noah before the
rains and the flood came?
Here’s something President Spencer W. Kimball said,
“As yet there was no evidence of rain and flood. [Noah’s] people mocked and
called him a fool. His preaching fell on deaf ears. His warnings were
considered irrational. There was no precedent; never had it been known that a
deluge [or flood] could cover the earth. How foolish to build an ark on dry
ground with the sun shining and life moving forward as usual!”
How does that relate to our day? Do people think we
are foolish for believing in God and wanting to keep His commandments?
Why is it important to listen to the words of the
prophets? How are we blessed by having a prophet on the earth today?
President Thomas S. Monson said,
“Noah had the unwavering faith to follow God’s commandments.
May we ever do likewise. May we remember that the wisdom of God ofttimes
appears as foolishness to men; but the greatest lesson we can learn in
mortality is that when God speaks and we obey, we will always be right.”
What did the rainbow become a token of after the Flood?
The “bow” is a token that God will never flood the entire
earth again (see Genesis
9:13–15). Yet, there was more to the covenant God made with Noah. The
Joseph Smith Translation helps us understand that God was renewing the same
covenant He made with Enoch (see Joseph
Smith Translation, Genesis 9:21–25, in the Bible appendix). This covenant
included a promise that when Noah’s posterity obeyed all of God’s commandments,
the heavens and earth would rejoice, and Enoch’s city of Zion would again come
upon the earth.
