50 The Ten Commandments Help Us Love God and Our Neighbor
When the children of Israel were camped at Mount Sinai,
the Lord revealed the Ten Commandments. By keeping the Ten Commandments, we
show our love for God and others. As we strive to love others as Heavenly
Father and Jesus Christ do, our love for Them also increases. This lesson can
help students understand ways to keep commandments that will help them love God
and their neighbor.
It’s interesting to look at the Ten Commandments, and then
to look at what the Savior said in
Mark 12: 19-21
29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the
commandments is, Hear,
O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
30 And thou shalt love the
Lord thy God with all thy heart,
and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength:
this is the first commandment.
31 And the second is like, namely this,
Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment
greater than these.
Jesus was quoting from the Old Testament, from Himself, when
He spoke those words.
Matthew 22:40
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and
the prophets.
Deuteronomy 6:4-5
4 Hear,
O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord:
5 And thou shalt love the Lord thy
God with all thine heart,
and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
Can you see how the Ten Commandments are still applicable
today, and how they fit into the two categories of loving the Lord with
everything we’ve got and loving our neighbors as ourselves?
- How do
you think your feelings for God are reflected in how you treat His
commandments?
- Do you
think that the Ten Commandments were given as a measure for us to judge
each other and/or as a measure for us to take inventory on how we can
improve and do better?
- How
can someone breaking a commandment bring consequences of his or her actions
upon someone else?
Yesterday you discussed the first
four of the 10 Commandents that deal with loving and honoring God.
Today, we’ll look at Exodus
20:12–17 which deals with loving and honoring ourselves and our neighbors
(everyone).
12 ¶ Honour thy father and
thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which
the Lord thy God giveth thee.
13 Thou shalt
not kill.
14 Thou shalt not
commit adultery.
15 Thou shalt
not steal.
16 Thou shalt not
bear false witness against thy neighbour.
17 Thou shalt
not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy
neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor
his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.
Handout: Commandments that
Help Us Lover our Neighbor
“Honesty:
You Better Believe It!
President Nelson:
When we love God with all our hearts, He
turns our hearts to the well-being of others in a beautiful,
virtuous cycle.
President Monson:
We cannot truly love God if we do not love our fellow
travelers on this mortal journey. Likewise, we cannot fully love our fellowmen
if we do not love God, the Father of us all. The Apostle John tells us, “This
commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also” [1 John
4:21]. We are all spirit children of our Heavenly Father and, as such, are
brothers and sisters. As we keep this truth in mind, loving all of God’s
children will become easier.
